From near the Naval Monument we also get grand views of the huge harbor that has made Brest such a significant military and commercial port over the centuries.  Here we look southwestward across the entrance to the Penfeld River (which runs south through the center of the modern city of Brest) with a distant view of the entrance to the harbor beyond the large cranes.  Just to the right of the cranes and along the shoreline running southwest of the city would have been the location of the US Naval Air Station where Harry St.Clare served during WWI.
