As we approach this prominent "Naval Monument" we are told that we will soon be walking on US property. Inscribed as follows: "Erected by the United States of America to commemorate the achievements of the Naval Forces of the United States and France during the World War."  The original monument was destroyed by the Germans in 1941, but this exact replica was completed in 1958.  We spend time here reading more about the US Naval activities in European waters during the Great War, as well as enjoying interesting vistas.   To access one of Patrick's panoramas showing the commercial harbor district below the monument, CLICK HERE and use the "+" sign for the largest version, then back arrow to return to this page.
