The view is great from this higher vantage point.  This is near the
southeast corner tower of the fortress.  The view is best here for the "rade
de Brest" or "roadstead
of Brest".  This brings us to learn more about this "rade" or
"roadstead" term.  The term can also be translated to "Bay" but this body
of water is huge and is more like a protected inland sea. (See linked Wiki site
for more on this term).  This has made the area in and around the entrance
of the River Penfeld an excellent Atlantic port for centuries.  This castle
area has therefore been an important vantage point since at least Roman times.
