Day 12 - Peaceful Christmas Day on the Slogvik Farm - Slogvik Neighbors join us for another Christmas feast - another history lesson - Tues., Dec. 25, 2001

Out for a morning walk in his new sweater, Keith takes this photo of the sunrise over the Slogvik home.

A little later on his walk Keith takes this shot from above the house, but this time the view is more to the south and the mouth of Hervik fjord.

Back in the cozy house, Rotraud is at work in the kitchen preparing the Christmas day meal. The tree still stands but without all of the wrapped presents.

Keith relaxes in his new sweater and enjoys morning coffee out of the personalized cup that Sonja & Ellen created for him.

Einar tries out his new digital camera. The battle of the digital cameras has begun!

Neighbor Gjertrud stops by for a visit and gives us a beautiful Christmas tree ornament she has made.

This is a scanned view of the delicately made ornament on a black background.  The craft is called "nupereler" in Norwegian, and "tatting" in English.  It is stiffened with sugar water.

We are again treated to homegrown music, thanks to Ellen and Sonja.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the computer/TV room, Einar & Terje start the traditional Christmas jigsaw puzzle.  This year it is a Portland lighthouse in honor of the upcoming trip to America.

As the special Christmas dinner nears, the table is transformed into a work of art. The center feature is "Hettervik salmon," smoked mackerel and dried meats.

Such a beautiful table setting deserves a second photo. Among the many tasty dishes is the traditional flat bread and cheeses on the far left.

Our guests of honor this evening, seated between Ellen & Terje, are neighbors Kåre  Slogvik and Gjertrud. Kåre has the adjacent farm to the south and is Einar's cousin.

After a wonderful meal, we relax with coffee and cookies. Kåre & Einar engage in interesting conversation about some history of the Slogvik farm and some of the books Keith was recently given.

Before going any further, we should point out that the gorgeous and complementing sweaters that Kåre & Gjertrud are wearing were hand knitted by Gjertrud!

Kåre continues to relate verbal folklore about Keith's Quaker great great granduncle, Anders Slogvik. We will try to relate this information on a separate page.
