This view of the roof of this huge structure shows the false roof built above
the 20 foot thick reinforced concrete main roof. Even after many Allied
bombing missions it was only towards the end of the war that direct hits by
British "tall-boy" bombs finally knocked one or two holes all the way through to
an actual sub pen. Even then there was reportedly little damage done at
water level. Patrick and Keith were honored when the Base Commander took
them inside to show them where one gaping hole still exists from this bombing.
As this massive structure is not easily removed or remodeled, the French Navy
finds creative ways to use this monstrous structure.
