Park Gathering - Procession through Cemetery

Just before noon on May 15th, 2004, folks started to gather at the Fairview Park, just south of Napa's Tulocay Cemetery.  Several hundred folks met to meet family, friends, guests from Norway, and to enjoy special entertainment.  The activities at the park led to a procession up through the Cemetery to the Slooper bautastein (monument stone) dedication site.

Our guests from Norway gather first in the lobby of the River Terrace Inn to show off their strikingly beautiful Rogaland bunader (local ethnic dresses).

A larger group of Rogaland guests gather for a photo op at the Park. Sons of Norway lodge banners are displayed on the fence.

The lively Nordhahl Grieg Leikarring/Spelemannslag musicians start to play - dancing will soon follow.

The Bay area dancers demonstrate lively Norwegian dances

After these dances, the group invited willing audience members to learn some dances.

Keith gets the honor of introducing guest star Hanne Krogh who gives us some introductory songs.

With out accompaniment, Hanne's lovely voice graces the pleasant gathering.

After the entertainment, it was time to start gathering for the procession to the cemetery.

The Nordhahl Grieg dancers would first lead us in a circular "Grand March."

The "march" would then turn in to the procession parade with local Sons of Norway Lodges proudly displaying their banners.

More lodges and individuals follow

And still more lodges, including the Fram Lodge #13 from Eureka - Peg & Keith's lodge.

More friends & relatives follow the lodge goups.

More family and friends, including representatives of Mad River with an Italian peace flag.

With flags flying, Keith, the musicians & dancers lead the procession up in to the beautiful Tulocay Cemetery.

We were met by the Cemetery's historian Nancy Brennan who tells us more about some of the interesting folks buried here. Don Cayetano Juarez, great grandson of the original land grantee who donated the land for the cemetery in 1848, is in the background (his wife has Norwegian heritage!)

The group pauses at another cemetery site to learn a little more history.

Soon the large group meanders up through the cemetery and nears the dedication site.
