Richard & Annabel take the ferry to the North Island while we take their car to Nelson to sight see.

A view of coastal waters, actually the upper reaches of Queen Charlotte Sound on the Picton-Nelson road.

We stop to photograph some examples of the extensive tree farming in the area.

Here the mountain is planted with Monterey Pine which will be harvested in 30 short years.

Downtown Nelson - a charming, yet busy town.  Just the right size for our interests.

View across southern tip of
Tasman Bay, as we leave Nelson in the bus for a trip along the west coast of the south island to Greymouth.

Again from the bus, a typical bucolic scene of sheep on their spring pasture.

Highway 6 offers views of snow capped mountains and green valleys along the rain swollen Buller River.

A road builder's challenge here -- carving the roadway out of solid rock.  We wonder at the clearance.

Whew, the bus is not too tall after all, but new concern -- this is just one lane, folks.

Sandy beach & treacherous rocks make up the landscape here where the coast meets the Tasman Sea.

Eye appealing views pleasure the senses as we tour along the coast line.

A distant view of the coastline appears as we head south on Highway 6

At Punakaiki we stop for a break, coffee & a stroll to a nearby view point before we reach Graymouth.

Aboard scenic Tranz-Alpine Train from Graymouth on the west coast and Christchurch on the east coast.

The stop at Arthur's Pass, on the Tranz-Alpine, rated among the world's top award winning rail crossings

An overnight farm stay with these great folk -- also Annabel's uncle Chris & aunt Colleen in a rural area near the major city of Christchurch.

Great hosts, Chris & Colleen entertained us with stories of rural life in New Zealand. We greatly enjoyed their warm hospitality!
