Day 16 - Dinner at the Home of Sjur & Berit Slogvik - Slogvik Cousins - Sat., Dec. 29, 2001

This evening we are invited, along with Rotraud & Einar, to dinner at the nearby home of Berit & Sjur Slogvik.  It is just a short walk and, with the full moon and snow, it will be a pleasant stroll.  Sjur is Einar's cousin and we had met him and his wife, Berit, on our previous visit.

Here neighbor Berit welcomes us into her home, but first we stop to admire the dolls (2 Nisse & 1 Billy goat) sitting on a beautiful old chest just inside their door. Also evident are some of the hand weavings Berit has done.

We are brought upstairs to meet others in this extended family. We are met with more holiday decorations and, in this end of the large living room, this traditionally decorated Christmas tree and fine grandfather clock.

Our hosts Sjur & Berit here  make us welcome and and seat us at this table laden with a very special holiday feast. Sjur's older brother Peder is on the far right.

With lovely pictures on the wall in the dinning area, the group pauses for this photo before we begin eating. From left: Berit, Sjur, brother Peder, Kjell Vesterøy and his wife and Sjur's sister Hanne-Marie, Peg, cousin Einar and Rotraud.

Dessert time - among other treats, Krum kake, dravle, and molte berries, hand-picked by Sjur and Berit earlier this year, grace this end of the table.  Such a fine feast!!

On the other end of the dessert table, we can see the marzipan kake and cookies that contributed to the overall wonder of this table.

Berit talks a little about the recently remodeled and enlarged kitchen work area.  It seemed like a great place to prepare meals.

Among the several interesting pictures on the walls, this one caught our imagination because of the snow and the Viking nature of the subjects. We later learn that this is from a famous painting by the prominent artist from Voss, Knud Bergslien (1827-1908), depicting the saving of infant Norwegian Prince Haakon in 1206.

Peg liked this older photo of the Slogvik home where this family was raised on Bruk 1, (adjacent to Einar & Rotraud's Bruk 7).

As we adjourn to the living room, Keith starts to make friends with the katt of the house but the flash from the camera is just too much.

A picture of Sjur taking a picture. Here we have Sjur's younger brother Steinar on left. He was not able to join us earlier.

Sjur, Steinar's wife Gunnhild and Steinar enjoy lively conversation.

Keith could not resist taking this photo of cousins Einar and Peder sitting right below a painting by Lars Hertervig.

On our walk both to and from Sjur & Berit's home this evening it was too dark for good photos, however the moon gave us ample light for the walk. If you look closely here, you might notice a little reflection on each side of Einar & Rotraud ahead of us.

To provide safety for pedestrians during these long dark nights, there is a campaign for folks to use these 2½ inch diameter reflectors. They are given away with instructions to pin them inside of a coat pocket. They can then easily be dropped out at night to dangle and warn motorists of one's presence. An excellent idea!
