Day 14 - Nedstrand Ungdomshus Museum, part 2 - Visit to Sigmar Myhre's Home - Skjoldastraumen Church - Cousin Ingrid - Thurs., Dec. 27, 2001

The first 6 photos on this page are from the Vatland samling (or collection), the first one from the ground floor, the following 5 from upstairs.  See Day 14, part 1, for information about this museum.

Next to the stairs we find this display of old skiing gear.

Upstairs, Sigmar demonstrates to Keith how these tools were used to make wooden shoes. Eli looks on.

Nautical and fishing gear are displayed here.

Keith is very impressed by the wonderful collection of old woodworking tools

Sigmar tells us about the cooper tools and the process of making barrels.

As Einar and Sigmar prepare to descend the stairs, Keith views more cooper tools.

Sigmar is the last one out and must lock up.  We consider ourselves most fortunate, not only to have seen these displays, but to have had them interpreted by 2 such knowledgeable local experts.

As we emerge from this wonderful venture into the past, we look down the lane leading to the main road and see the modern Norway - a tug pulling an oil platform up the fjord.

We are now invited into Sigmar's home at Stuvik, just next to Nedstrand. Here we pause in a downstairs room and we realize that his home is a museum in its own right.

Both Keith & Peg are attracted to this painting by the noted Norwegian artist, Nicolai Astrup.

There must be a creative caption to this photo, but regardless, this shows a wonderful old clock and rifle.

Upstairs in this lovely home we are treated to coffee, lefse, Christmas bread and enjoyable conversation. Keith is honored by a gift of the Tysvær Historielag's book about Tysvær emigration to America, Vestover!.

Before we leave, we are invited in to Sigmar's upstairs "Captain's Cabin." This sunny room faces out over the fjord with a view that stretches to the sea. The theme is nautical, complete with ship's wheel, bell, lamps and many other authentic pieces from ships and boats.

The bright sun light still gives us problems as Keith takes this photo of the group, this time from the window facing back in to the "Captain's Cabin."

Here Sigmar shows Keith a couple of his model ships. Other nautical artifacts can be seen here, as well as the "ghost of Einar" showing in the porthole picture frame on the upper right. We now must leave this fascinating home and the company of Eli and Sigmar.

Driving west from Nedstrand, Keith gets a fast photo of the Musland and Bjelland areas.

After crossing the fjord we pause at the Skjoldastraumen Church for this photo.

As the afternoon light dims, Keith takes one last photo of the icy road near the Erland farm.

Arriving back at Slogvik we find Keith's 4th cousin, Ingrid Austrheim (from Nordre Askeland) waiting for us with Rotraud. Rotraud has prepared a special traditional dinner for us, consisting of pinnekjøtt, kålrabistappe, poteter and for desert, krumkake med molte krem.

After this wonderful feast,  Ingrid, Peg and Keith pose for the official "cousins" photograph.

Later that evening, we find Rotraud & Peg in the TV room watching David Copperfield while Einar works on the 1,500 piece puzzle.
