Day 10 - Snowy drive to Hervik - visit with Signy Hettervik - Dinner with Nils Olaf Østrem - Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001

Another cold, dark and snowy morning at Slogvik. It is still beautiful and Keith is out for a morning walk

Looking down the farm road, Keith sees Einar coming back on the tractor after feeding the cows.

This is the view down the lane from the main road with the barn showing center - beyond is Hervik fjord and Borgøy Island.

From the same spot as the last photo, this is the view down the main road that goes south to the community (& farm) of Hervik.

Einar is soon driving Peg & Keith south on this snowy road headed towards Hervik. We were going through the Voll farm here.

We turn off the main road and get this view of the Hervik bay and waterfront community. The large Hervik Konservering factory (fruit jam and juice works) is on the left.

Just beyond the factory we come to the lovely Hettervik home which is situated on the peninsula and faces the bay. This is the elegant table Signy Hettervik has set for us.

Before we eat, we must look out this window at the great view of the bay and the homes beyond. Prominent here is one of the Hettervik boats. Signy's husband, John, won't be able to join us as he is out on their larger boat that services the many fjord fish farms.

Here Signy and Peg pause in their enjoyable conversation that seemed to cover a thousand topics. Signy was a most gracious host and interesting conversationalist.

Once started, Keith and Einar get to the business of eating the delicious holiday treats and drinking the rich Norwegian coffee.

Keith finds that the Hettervik cat can understand his horrible Norwegian.

Another view of the large Hettervik living room with its many interesting art pieces and holiday decorations.

This is the view of their breakfast nook in the Hettervik kitchen, complete with holiday decorations and a "knock your socks off" view.

As we get ready to leave this warm and friendly home, Keith has to photograph the Nisse dolls on the stairway.

Driving back north, we get a photo of this fjord cod farm in the Hervik fjord. This is at Narravik.

Continuing north towards the Slogvik farm, Einar pulls off on a lane to show Keith where the Quakers had planned to have a graveyard at Stølen. It never happened.

We stop and photograph this frozen and snow covered lake. It is Hundsnesvatnet on the Hundsnes farm. This is where Einar and the other neighborhood kids came to ice skate in years past.

The honored guests for dinner this evening were Nils Olaf Østrem and his wife Ingbjørg Vagle Østrem. Keith had corresponded with Nils in the past and met him briefly during the 4th of July 2000  emigration parade in Stavanger.

Rotraud serves traditional torsk (cod) and potatoes to Ingbjørg (in foreground) and  Nils & Keith who carry on a lively discussion. Nils teaches at the same university as Hans Eirik Aarik. Nils, among other things, has authored 2 of the Tysvær bygdebøker (numbers 4 & 5).

Interesting talk and fine eating continues. Left to right are Keith, Nils Olaf (back to camera), Einar, Rotraud and Ingbjørg Vagle. Of course the main topic of conversation was local history & genealogy. The role of the early Quakers and Sloopers were well covered.

Later in the evening we were treated to a Slogvik tradition - that of watching the annual TV showing of the British slapstick comedy with a title something like "Same Procedure as Last Year - Sophie & the Butler." This was most fun. Later the young folks enjoyed a game of Canasta.

Tired from a full day, Rotraud & Peg relax late in the evening.

Tired PC has no trouble relaxing either.
