Day 5 - "Easy day" - Slogvik Sunrise/Sunset, Fiskerens Venn, Visit to Laura's House - Tues., Dec. 18, 2001

The Slogviks had scheduled an "easy day" for us without any elaborate "program" or activities.  It was a time to rest up, to visit family and enjoy the location of the farm.  In addition to what is mentioned below, we do not want to leave out a late evening visit from Einar's friend and sometimes co-worker, Nils. Nils stopped by for an enjoyable visit and brought a gift of a wonderful selection of Norwegian cheeses.

On our second morning on the Slogvik farm, we were awakened by a pink glow at our window.  It was the first of many stunning sunrises.

And this view is from the upstairs TV/computer room. While it looks like there is snow on the ground, it is only a very heavy frost that lasted throughout the day.

This view of the sky over Hervik fjord was taken later in the day as the early afternoon sunset approaches.

The sunset as viewed from the Slogvik farm deepens as the sun gradually sinks lower.

These are not all of the sunrise/sunset photos we took. We took many but will spare you the great volume. We will try to present just a few now and then.

During the quiet afternoon a local lady came to the door selling the attractive charity magazine, Fiskerens Venn (The Fisherman's Friend). We were told that this is another holiday tradition, so we bought one in addition to the one the Slogviks bought. When we tried to give the lady 50 kroner for the 35 kroner magazine, she insisted on giving us change for the stated price of 35.

After a dinner of lamb and cabbage (or "garbage"- but that is another funny language story), we walk the short distance down the hill to Einar's mother's home for traditional dravle and coffee. Here other family members are also visiting Laura, who lives alone since her husband died. From left: Einar's sister Jorunn, young Hilde, Laura, Anna & Erik (each holding one of their twins, Erlend & Arvid), Keith, Einar and PC.

Anna on the floor with one of her twins. They were really sweet little guys!

Later in the evening Peg is found upstairs demonstrating modern Norwegian shopping skills. While online, she is on the phone with Rotraud's daughter Ellen in Bergen. Ellen is helping and advising in the big Wheeler sweater gift project!
