02. Day 2, Part 2 - Stavanger Evening - Saturday, December 15, 2001

After a day touring out from Stavanger, Gunleif and Keith again settle in the lounge at the hotel to pour over more of the research material Gunleif had furnished. Hopefully later we can share some of this information.

This is the first of many night street scenes in the Stavanger shopping area near the Cathedral.  The temperature was very low and seemed to cause some problems with our flash shots, so bear with some of the blurry shots below.

Here Peg is just outside a McDonald's. Not surprisingly, this seems to be a congregating place for young people. Maybe that is why we notice more litter on the streets here ... adolescent rebellion, Norway style...??

Another street scene. Most of the shops were closed by this time and there was only light foot traffic, mostly related to the numerous restaurants in the area.

Walking down by the harbor, we come across the old restored steamer, Gamle Rogaland. We had the privilege to sail on this ship on the 4th of July during our previous visit. (2000 photos)

That was Peg standing next to the Gamle Rogaland in the last photo.  Here Keith poses by its bow with the building and lights across the harbor making interesting reflections.

Walking farther along the waterfront, we come to this large cable laying ship. Keith was quite impressed with the huge size of the cable spool amidships.

A just a little further we come to the MF Lysefjord, the ferry/tour boat that we took on our memorable cruise up the famous and picturesque Lysefjord. Looks cold and lonely now. (previous photo)

While a little blurry, we couldn't resist sharing this photo of Peg with the bronze statue of the shopping lady - very appropriate with the background and season.

Here the statue of Alexander Kielland, sans seagull on his hat, is seen before the entrance to the Stavanger Cathedral.  You might notice that the Christmas lights in Norway are predominately white -- colored lights are a US tradition.

This lighted Christmas tree and decorated shops are just across the street from the Cathedral.

Behind the Christmas tree, we spot a store window display that we must try to capture.  Is this some holiday merchandising influence from the US? The large letters spell out, "LOVE IS GIVING."  hum ...
