1910 US Census:  Age 48; Single; Immigration Year 1906; Living as a "Cabin Mate" of Norwegian Thomas Reknes & 2 other men at Eel River Valley Lumber Co. Mill & Camp, Rohnerville, Humboldt, California; Occupation of "Laborer, Lumber Mill".

 1920 US Census:  Age 58; Single; Immigration Year 1906; Naturalization Status "Alien"; Living as a boarder with many other workers in a mill boarding house on Newberg Road, Rohnerville; Occupation of "Laborer, Saw-mill".

 1930 US Census:  Listed as "Ernest Swan" born in "Scotland"; Age 68; Single; Immigration Year 1906; Living as a boarder in the home Gabriel & Inger Olsen, their 2 children and 2 other boarders (all others in household were listed as having been born in Norway); Ernest occupation was listed as "none"; Head of household Gabriel Olsen's occupation was listed as "Retail Merchant, Groceries" with his 24 year old son listed as "Salesman, Groceries" and the 2 other Norwegian boarders were listed as working as "Yard man, lumber mill"; the address of this household was "306 Pratt [now W Sonoma] St., Eureka" (near West Murray & West Hawthorne streets); Ernest was indicated as not being a veteran.

 1940 US Census:  Age 78; Widowed; Citizenship = Alien; Living as a Lodger in the home of 68 year old Gabriel Olsen, Gabriel's daughter Cecilie, her husband Gunnar Gimile and their son at 306 W Pratt [now W Sonoma] St., Eureka; Ernest was living in this same house in 1935; he had no occupation listed.

       Ernest August Schwand Called

   Ernest August Schwand, 78, died last night at a local nursing home following a serious illness of a month.  He had lived here 17 years and made his home with the Gabriel Olsen family at 206 West Pratt [now W. Sonoma St.].

   Born in Scotland, Schwand went to Norway with his parents when about six.  He later became a citizen of that country.  In 1906 he came to Fortuna, where he was employed at the Newberg mill.  He worked there until he retired about 1925.

   He was single and is believed to leave a step-brother, Thomas Gunderson, in the east.  He was a member of Sons of Norway Lodge No. 13 of Eureka.  He was also a member of the Norwegian-Danish Lutheran Church of this city.

   The body is at the Sanders Funeral Home.

 

Obituary:  Humboldt Standard, 10 Jan 1941, p. 2:

   Funeral services for Ernest August Schwand, 79, will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in Sanders' chapel with Rev. Paul Borup officiating.  At Ocean View cemetery rites will be under the auspices of Sons of Norway lodge of which Schwand was a member.

  Schmand (sic), seriously ill for a month, died Tuesday night in a local nursing home.  He made his home in Eureka for 17 years, living with the Gabriel Olsen family at 306 West Pratt [now W. Sonoma] street.  He was born in Scotland and moved to Norway with his parents when six years old, becoming a Norwegian citizen.  He came to Fortuna in 1906 and was employed in the Newberg lumber mill, retiring in 1925.

   Schwand was unmarried and is believed to have a step-brother, Thomas Gunderson, living in the east.  He was a member of the Norwegian-Danish Lutheran church in Eureka.

       Schwand Rites Set For Sunday

   Funeral services for Ernest A. Schwand will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Sanders chapel with Rev. Paul Borup officiating at the final rites.

   Interment will be in the Sons of Norway grounds at Ocean View cemetery with graveside rites in charge of the local lodge, Sons of Norway.
