1904 Eureka City Directory:  Occupation = laborer; residence: 1136 K Street.

1920 US Census:  Age 46, Single, living as roomer with Swedish couple (Nels & Emma Peterson) at 515 Hawthorne St., Eureka, CA; Immigration year = 1902; Occupation = lumber hand at lumber mill.

US Passport Application 9 Aug 1923: August Anderson swears that he was born at "Christensen, Norway" 19 Apr 1873 and "that my father, Anders Andersen was born in Norway and is now residing at Christensen, Norway; that I emigrated to the United States, sailing on board the Steamer Oxo from Hamberg (sic - Hamburg), Germany about March 15, 1892; that I resided 31 years, uninterruptedly, in the United States, from 1892 to 1923 at Humboldt County, California; that I was naturalized as a citizen of the United States before the Superior Court of Humboldt County, California on July 12th, 1923 as shown by the accompanying Certificate of Naturalization; ... my permanent residence being at Eureka, in the state of California, where I follow the occupation of Millman. ... I am about to go abroad temporarily, and intend to return to the United States within 12 months; and that I desire a passport for use in visiting the countries hereinafter named for the following purpose:

    Norway - To visit relatives.

    England, Denmark & other countries - For Travel.

I intend to leave the United States from the port of New York sailing on board the 'Stanjerforf' on August 28, 1923."

Eureka resident A. B. Adams attested to August's identity and the 2nd page of the passport application gave the following "Description of Applicant": Age 50 years; 5 feet 9 inches; Forehead low; Eyes blue; Nose straight; Mouth smooth; Chin oval; Hair brown; Complexion fair; Face round; Distinguishing marks "none".

1930 US Census:  Age 56, Single, living in Ward 5 in owned home ("Cabin") near 229 Truesdale St., Eureka, CA; Naturalized citizen; Occupation = laborer at lumber mill; Veteran = No.

 

Obituary: Eureka Humboldt Standard, 19 Feb 1959, p. 36, col 7:

             AUGUST ("GUS") ANDERSON

   August ("Gus") Anderson of Eureka died in a local nursing home on Wednesday morning after a lengthy illness.  He was 86 years of age, a native of Norway and had lived in the Eureka area since 1902.  He was a retired millworker, a member of the Eureka Sons of Norway lodge and the Eureka Moose lodge.

   Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Solvine Egeland of Kristiansen, Norway, and a nephew, William O. Ecklund of Orinda.

   Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. from Sanders Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy K. Malde officiating.  Interment will follow in the Sons of Norway plot of Ocean View cemetery, under the auspices of the  Sons of Norway lodge.
