San Francisco Shopping; Wilma Leaving; Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel; SF Ferry Bldg Market & Pier 39

20-22 May 2004

The 20th of May was the day that most of our Norwegian guest flew back to Norway.  We had left them at a motel near San Francisco's International Airport (SFO). The rest of us, including the 3 Slogvik sisters, Håkon, Ivar, Wilma, Peg and Keith would continue using the borrowed Drechsler house in western San Francisco as our home base.

This album covers 3 days.  The 1st day would see our Norwegian friends going in to the City to explore and to shop, while Keith and Peg stayed back to get caught up on some bookkeeping.  On the 2nd day we would drop off Wilma at SFO for her flight back to Florida. The rest of us drove down to tour Monterey, Pacific Grove, the famous 17 Mile Drive and Carmel.   On the 3rd day those of us remaining would take the bus in to the center of San Francisco to walk down Market Street to the market activity in and around the Ferry Building. After some shopping and lunch in this area, we ended our touring by going northwest along the waterfront to Pier 39.

DAY 1, May 20th - Not many photos in the early part of the day. Later the sisters show off their shopping loot to Ivar.
2

With a favorable US $ to Norwegian Kroner exchange rate, it was great fun to buy things for grandchildren.
3

It is time for dear friend Wilma Aubry to pack up in preparation to leave us in San Francisco & fly home to Florida.   She has made lifelong friends & we will miss her.
4

DAY 2, May 21st - Having dropped Wilma off at SFO, we drive south of San Francisco to arrive at the Old Fisherman's Wharf on Monterey Harbor.
5

A bit of historical Monterey - California's original first settlement - we pose in front of the early Customs House.
6

On the pier at Monterey with the popular gift shops and seafood restaurants another group photo is in order.
7

Coonskin hats, how American is that? Håkon & Norfrid try on a couple.
8

Good food and great view made for a very nice lunch experience at one of the Wharf restaurants.
9

Down the waterfront, the Monterey Canning Company  is the background for this friendly photo of Håkon & Peg with Helga observing.
10

The famously beautiful iceplant in the Pacific Grove area displays its color as we drive around the Monterey Peninsula.
11

Helga, Håkon, & Keith enjoy the coastal rock formations which are not altogether unfamiliar for these Norwegians raised in northern Rogaland.
12

Stopping along the 17 Mile Drive, with the world's most photographed cypress in the background, popularly called the Lone Cypress, Ivan, Jorunn & Helga take a moment to appreciate the view.
13

Carmel Beach provides an opportunity for Peg, Ivar, Jorunn, and Helga to go barefoot in the sand.
14

Very cooperative weather and visibility provided some outstanding light for photos.
15

Sisters, Helga & Jorunn actually dip their feet in the Pacific Ocean -- far away from the north Atlantic of their home sea.
16

Visiting one of the many galleries in Carmel, Norfrid has a serious meeting of the minds with Mr. Clemens (aka Mark Twain).
17

A dinner break with coffee as we head back up Highway 101 to our residence in San Francisco.
18

DAY 3, May 22nd - Saturday morning market at the Ferry building finds us arriving in the company of a particularly spry & delightful San Francisco resident.
19

May in California means strawberries.  Norfrid's in-laws are strawberry (jordbær) farmers. We did not hear what they thought of these.
20

Ivar and Håkon engage in some international diplomacy - but who was having a better "cultural experience"..?
21

Friends Keith and Ivar with the Bay Bridge in the background.
22

The celebrated monument to Ghandi simply invited these two Norwegian travelers to stand for a photo.
23

A nice group portrait taken at Pier 39 by a kindly passer by.
24

Alcatraz Island provides the background for this happy group's photo on the overpass next to Pier 39.
