Lillie M. LYMES(2) was born on
21 Apr 1868 in Monticello, IA. She died on 21 Feb 1948 in Council Buffs, IA.
She was buried in Osceola, NE (?). "Grandma Deputy" was the 3rd born
of 10 children (she had 9 sisters, Edna Nichols the oldest, Em the youngest).
She had five children of her own. When her son David's wife, Salome, died giving
birth to her 13th child (7 were already dec'd.), Lilly, who had been living with
them on a farm near Council Bluffs, Iowa, continued to help raise the children
there. She hated housework and preferred to work in the field with David. She
was a hard worker. When her granddaughter Arlene was young, she spent summers
there and she remembers"Grandma Deputy" used to write poems and plays.
The plays were enacted each summer when all the grandchildren would perform
at family reunions on July 4." She is remembered for grabbing chickens
two at a time, wring their necks in preparation for a big farm meal. Great grandaughter,
Peggy, has a quilt pieced by "Grandma Deputy."

in ____________, __. Married H. Earl Howard who worked in the Freight Accounts
Office at the Union Pacific headquarters, Omaha, NE, from 1930 to 1950. Both
Mary and "uncle Earl" attended as witnesses for the marriage of Lucy
to Roland B. Bartlett. Mary had 2 boys, Felix and Melvin, and 1 girl, Eva (b.1908),
by a previous marriage (Whitaker)
A bit of family folk lore is as follows: On the night of her son, Melvin's fatal
auto accident, it was said Mary's black hair suddenly turned all white. Mary
was especially proud of Melvin as he could pick up any musical instrument and
play it well; he never had a lesson.

David DEPUTY(2) was born on 6 Aug 1896
in Silver Creek, NE. He died on 6 Jul 1961 in Council Buffs, IA. Worked as
brakeman for Union Pacific RR at the Council Bluffs yards from 1930 to 1940.
Married Salome ? (b. Lamoni, IA); They had 13 children in 13 years; 6 lived (Raymond
who was kicked by a horse, Lily, Elizabeth, Mary Arlene, Charles Dean and Donald
the youngest). Salome died giving birth to last child. Some family information
indicates that David had an 80 acre farm near Council Bluffs.
