28. Kristian's mechanical "Ox" (& related mini logging equipment) and the Velle's Boat.

See Travel Reports #13 (Ox) & #15 (boat)

Title: On the street in front of the Velle home we find Kristian's "Ox."  Sitting in the custom trailer that Kristian built, is this Swedish built device that runs on tracks and is powered by a small gasoline engine. On this day he needed to unload it.

Title: The custom trailer has a tilt bed which facilitates the unloading process. He uses his "Ox" to winch out and load small firewood logs and bring them out of the woods with less impact on the forest floor than a man's footprint.

Title: Here Kristian demonstrates how easily the Ox "walks" up the bank in the vacant lot beside his home. The sensitive hydraulic controls make maneuvering this devise seem remarkably easy.

Title: This photo, with the Velle home in the background, shows the log dolly trailer that Kristian built to facilitate carrying the logs out of the woods. Kristian takes his firewood getting hobby very seriously. He says this saves him joining a health club for exercise.

Title: Here Kristian "leads" his "Ox" down the street for storage so that he can put his custom built racks on the trailer.  Tomorrow he will take his truck and trailer to the woods to collect firewood that he has previously cut and split.

Title: Here Kristian easily backs his "Ox" and dolly up the driveway for storage. This machine, with all of his ingenious modifications and additions, is truly impressive. We only wish we could share the video of the firewood splitting devices he has invented.

Title: Just below the Velle home we find this private breakwater and dock that is shared by several of the neighbors. The Velle boat is in the center here, moored farther out. Part of Jørpeland can be seen in the distance to the left.

Title: This rear view of Kristian's boat gives even a better view of Jørpeland in the distance.  The view is towards the east southeast.

Title: The Amanda Karoline, with a fiberglass hull, is a 33 foot cabin motor cruiser powered by a large Cummings diesel engine and equipped for the open seas. After buying the fiberglass hull, Kristian finished the complete boat himself.

Title: This view of the Velle boat looks back towards the Velle home, which is hidden here by some trees. We had planned to cruise in this boat up to the Skiften farm to the north but poor weather on that day caused a change of plans.

Title: Another view of Kristian's attractive and well equipped boat with other boats belonging to the neighbors in the background. It was in this boat that we had a most enjoyable night cruise on the fjord, along with an interesting night crabbing experience.

Title: This interior photo shows the forward part of the main cabin with the pilots controls on the right, dining table behind this and small kitchen to the left foreground. High tech equipment and very fine woodworking is apparent.

Title: This picture shows more detail of the pilot's control & navigation station. The latest in navigation & communication equipment is evident. The toggle levers in the center right are the main steering and propulsion controls.  Notice the clear hatch above the captain's chair showing at the top of this photo.

Title: This view shows the forward bunks; WC is behind door on left; door on right accesses another sleeping area. This large well equipped boat permits long voyages as well as fun day trips. Their longest voyage was to Denmark and back.
