Day 2, Sunday - Hervik/Hettervik & Aarvik visits

Having settled in at the Slogvik home in Tysvær we enjoy a reunion with our dear friends Rotraud and Einar. Their place now feels like our second home and we sleep late in their cozy "SSSS bedroom." Around midday Sunday we prepare to drive a few kilometers south to the picturesque village of Hervik.  Here we will have dinner with the Hettervik family, good friends of the Slogviks. We had previously visited the Hettervik home during our Dec. 2001 visit.

This picture of the Hervik bay (or vik) was scanned & cropped from a postcard we had previously received from Signy Hettervik. Their large white home can be seen behind & to the right of the large red boat.

This beautiful view of the bay is from the Hettervik deck looking back westward.

Here we settle in to the very comfortable living room.  John Hettervik is on the far left, then Einar, Rotraud, Peg, then the Hettervik's visiting daughter Sivjane, & Signy Hettervik on far right.

Keith had met Smokey Hettervik previously & wanted to get another photo of his friend. However, as he moved under the stove for some comfortable warms, this was problematic. He was told to get back in his cradle bed &, to Keith's amazement, he did!

After a most delicious meal, we return to the coffee table for the coffee, lefse and deserts for which Signy is famous. Here we have Rotraud, Peg, Sivjane & Signy waiting for the photo op to end.

John has a significant business called "Oddegutt Fisketransport A/S" which services the fish farming industry by moving fish around in these high-tech boats. His boat is moored just below his home. We see 2 here, but he has just sold the smaller boat & it will soon leave.

Down on the dock below the Hettervik home we get this view of the north end of Hervik bay. The large Hervik Konservering factory (fruit jam and juice works) is on the far right.

John takes us aboard the larger of the 2 boats moored below the house. We get John to pose here on deck with Keith & Einar. On the left of this photo an edge of one of the huge fish holding tanks can be seen.

Here we see John in the rear of the upper bridge where sophisticated controls can remotely & efficiently move fish in & out of the large holding tanks aboard. When in operation a crew of 4 is needed with 2 12 hr. shifts totaling then a crew of 8 persons. The crew's accommodations are quite modern & comfortable.

As we prepare to leave Hervik, Keith takes one last photo to the southeast across the Hervikfjord. The land across the fjord is a finger jutting out southwest of Nedstrand & it is in this general area where the Topnes farm is located. Keith is currently trying to help a fellow from Minnesota learn more about his ancestors from this area.

We return to the Slogvik home & in the evening we have a delightful visit from Emly & Alf Årvik, Keith's distant cousins whom we met on our last visit. Alf is also able to provide some information on the history of the Årvik farm so that Keith can relay this information on to the same fellow who seeks information on the Topnes farm.
