Stavanger Saturday PM - Finding Madland Addresses - Island of Mosterøy

After the Anti-War demonstration, Kate & Gunleif gave us a tour of the magnificent Stavanger Domkirke (cathedral) then we walked north in to the center of the old city business district for a special historical treat for Keith.

The only photo we took inside the cathedral was this one that Peg took of the magnificent stained glass windows on the east end. This glass artwork dates more recently from 1957.

Avid researcher Gunleif has been working on finding out more about the "Sloopers" (1st emigrant boatload to leave Norway in 1825). Among other interesting information, he has now indications of where Keith's Madland family ancestors lived in the years just prior to 1825 - this being near the prominent Valberg Tower, shown here.

Looking northeast from the Tower we see a white building which is now a popular coffee shop.  To the left are 2 buildings having current addresses that match with Gunleif's research indicating that it was here that the Madland family probably lived & Tormod had his blacksmith shop from about 1817 to 1825.

Here we get a closer look at the 2 houses at this address. The houses look old, but most probably not old enough to be the ones that actually stood here in the early 1800's.

A close up view of the southern most house - now with the address of number 5.

The gray northernmost house is now number 7. We wonder where the blacksmithing was done...?

Could this be one of Keith's distant cousins? This friendly fellow in front of Nr. 7 lets us know that this is his neighborhood.

After the house viewing we find this nearby warm café where we enjoyed bacalao (Spanish influenced dried cod in spicy tomato sauce) & fish soup. At this café you can also get your hair done!

Walking back to the car we met these 3 "street folks" role playing early country peasants or travelers. Peg was embarrassed as Keith engaged them in conversation & bought some of their wares.

At the cold toe of the Stavanger harbor Keith gets Peg to pose with one of the 23 "Broken Column" sculptures recently placed in specific locations around Stavanger.

Gunleif & Kate generously offer to drive us north to the Slogvik farm. We stop on the way to pay a short visit to the Utstein Monastery on the island of Mosterøy just north of Stavanger

We could not tour the interior of the monastery as it had been rented for someone's 60th birthday party. Leaving the monastery grounds, Keith gets this photo of the sunset from Mosterøy.
