ELEVENTH GENERATION

1852. Thomas HOWES (920) was born about 1590 in England. He died betw 6 and 18 Oct 1665 in MA. IMMIGRANT. "Court records show that Thomas Howes was first in Lynn in 1637 (not Salem; that's where the court was) and then moved to Yarmouth in 1638 where he was one of the original grantees, as were Anthony Thacher and John Crow[ell]. Howes says, p. 7: 'It is well established that he was a man physically strong and robust, of good moral character, possessed a fair education, and was largely endowed with good common sense. That his character and standing was excellent in the community where he lived, is proved by the prominent part he took in the formation of the township where he located, and the many official duties he was elected to perform in the work of perfecting and developing its interests.' ... Thomas was constable in 1644, deputy to the General Court for seven terms between 1652 and 1662, and served on many juries and committees, including one investigating trade at Kennebec, Maine. He died between 6 Oct 1665 (the date of acknowledgement of his will) and 18 Oct 1665 (the date of the inventory). Howes says he was 75 years old at the time of his death (p. 10), so he had been born about 1590. His wife Mary was named executrix and his will provided that his son Thomas was to teach his grandson Samuel the trade of a cooper." (Bonnie Hubbard)
He was married to Mary BURR? in England.

1853. Mary BURR?(921). IMMIGRANT. "... J.W. Hawes in 1917, points out that there is no proof ... that his (Thomas') wife Mary was a Burr. Howes doesn't say where the name Burr came from, but in 1834 a monument was erected in the Howes burial plot in Dennis which mentions Thomas and 'his wife, Mary Burr.' Perhaps it was in a family Bible, since lost." (Bonnie Hubbard) Bonnie Hubbard also indicates (in her Atwood chapter) that 2 years after Thomas' death, Mary became the 4th wife of Thomas Prence, this Thomas being the governor of the Plymouth Colony. Upon Prence's death "his will stipulated that Mary should have a 'Court
Cubberd' and it remained in the Howes family until the twentieth century." This "Prence-Howes Plymouth Cupboard" said to have been made by Kenelm Winslow.
