EIGHTH GENERATION

230. Capt. Daniel SEARS (474) was born in 1682 or 1683 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA. He died on 10 Aug 1756 in Chatham, Barnstable, MA. "Daniel Sears married Sarah Howes and settled in Monomoit in 1709, becoming a partner with his brother who had moved there about a year earlier. Both men became leading citizens of the town, soon incorporated as Chatham. Daniel was town clerk 24 years between 1715 and 1753, selectman 8 years, and held other offices as well. He was ensign by 1722, lieutenant by 1733 and later captain of the local military company. There were no school houses in Chatham until after the revolution, but town records show that school was kept one quarter of 1724 at the home of Daniel Howes and perhaps other times as well, since Smith notes that the town clerk did not record all the votes on school affairs. It appears from the settlement of his estate that there was a school house as early as 1750 on Daniel's farm, built perhaps to avoid having to use a room in his house. In those days only boys attended school. In 1729 Daniel was one of the selectmen involved in building that meeting house (see Atwood Appendix 4) which was rebuilt in 1773 with Joseph Atwood one of those supervising." (Bonnie Hubbard) He was married to Sarah HOWES on 12 Feb 1708/9 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.
