near Dorchester, England?. "I recently learned from 'The Smith Issue' of
The American Genealogist (61:1) that the information I quoted from Freeman on
page 2 of 'The Mayhews and New England Smiths' chapter has been found to be incorrect.
Our John Smith was not the son of a Thomas Smith in Dorsetshire. Apparently
Freeman's notes got mixed up and the Dorset information pertained to another
man. So the origin and dates of birth and immigration of John Smith are still
