26. James W. ROSS (182)(183) was born on 8 Oct 1808 in WV. He died in 1887 in Eldorado, Butler Co., KS. He was buried in Eldorado, Butler Co., KS. "... had a wagon factory in West Virginia ... later moved to Senacaville, Ohio, where he had a saddle factory." (Birch ..)
"... lived in West Virginia at or near Pricketts Fort which is near Fairmont, West Virginia. ... move ... to Senecaville, Ohio was between 1842 and 1846. ... established a saddle tree factory ... When their daughter, Eliza Ann Ross, reached eighteen she became engaged to be married to John Allen Birch. The Ross family was preparing to move to Flora, Illinois so rather than to break up the match arrangements were made and the couple were married. ... It was sometime after 1865 that James Ross and family moved to a farm near Eldorado, Kansas. James Ross died in 1887 and was buried in the cemetery at Eldorado, Kansas." (Morgan ..) He was married to Margaret MEREDITH in 1832 in (prob.) Monongalia Co., WV.

27. Margaret MEREDITH (184) (photo) was born in Jan 1806 in (poss.) Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. She died after 1887 in Eldorado, Butler Co., KS. She was buried in Eldorado, Butler Co., KS. "... was of a Welsh family."
"... was buried by the side of her husband." Children were:

child i. Mary Catherine ROSS was born on 2 Jun 1834. She died on 17 Mar 1881.

child iii. John Meredith ROSS was born on 18 Aug 1840. He died on 13 Feb 1917.
child iv. Matilda "Til" Jane ROSS(5) (photo) was born on 12 Nov 1842. She died in Feb 1920. She was buried in Orland, Glenn Co., CA. Graves Cemetery west of Orland. "Aunt Till" had a daughter Maggie (Lewis); they both lived in San Francisco. She or her daughter managed a large apartment building there. This apartment house was severely damaged in the 1906 earthquake (quake damage photo) and rendered uninhabitable.. Among the family's favorite photos, are two of "Aunt Til" and "Aunt Maggie" dressed as proper city ladies in front of their new home, a tent in the park. child v. Harriet "Hattie" Maria ROSS(185) (186) (photo) was born on 7 Aug 1846. She died on 16 Apr 1926. "... married Theodore Benton Birch November 2, 1865 in Flora, Illinois. Their first child, Esther Eliza Birch (Bernhard Martin Mehl's mother) was born October 20, 1866." She had 10 children. "... was a strong character and very industrious." Before her husband's death she helped make the living by taking in washing and weaving rag rugs on her loom.
"She had been for years an active member in the Methodist Church, and still is a teacher in the Sunday School. ... It is a gratification to Mrs. Birch to know that through her training, and their own intelligence and self-respect, her sons have never entered a saloon. She recalls the pioneer days in Glenn County, when the present site of Orland was a grain field; and no one has been more interested than she in the preservation of the interesting data of the early history of the county."
