PHOTO SAMPLER -  THAILAND'S ORCHIDS - VISIT TO LOCAL ORCHID FARM, 17 AUGUST 2003

Beautiful flowers are abundant in lush Thailand. Most exotic for us from California are the indigenous orchids found in many diverse locations.  Here are just a few we photographed, including our memorable visit to a Ban Pong orchid farm, the CHOM  ORCHIDS NURSERY, Vanda & Ascocenda Growers.

Commonly found on temple grounds ...

In, or in front of, businesses ...

In people's yards ...

Hanging in coconut shells behind the hospital ...:

Along walkways ...

At resorts & restaurants ...

Abundant on floats in parades ...

On the College Campus just outside the dining hall ...

A close-up of a campus orchid that greets us each day!

Friend Jing (left) takes us to a nearby Orchid Nursery - a family operation - mother, son & daughter-in-law shown here.

Some of the blooming hybrids are protected from birds by plastic coverings.

Thousands of orchid plants suspended by wires in this impressive facility.

They ship large quantities of these plants to Florida & California, as well as other parts of the world.

Our hosts, Jing & Peg stand behind a table where 1-year-old plants are being repotted.

This one shows some buds coming on.

This was one of Chom's prize winners.

No soil here -  roots hang down exposed & get nutrients only from fertilizer dissolved in the water spray

The special plants are tagged for positive identification.

One last shot of Peg amongst these beauties. We would love to take some home with us to our son & his wife who love orchids ... Oh, well ...

After this delightful tour we all sit down to discuss orchid growing & this family operation. The big friendly family dog poses for Keith.
