Relative to Commending the
WHEREAS,
On May 15, 2004, a monument stone will be dedicated at the grave site of Sloopers,
Jakob & Serena Anderson, at Napa Tulocay Cemetery
in Napa, and it is appropriate at this time to draw the special attention of
the public to this historic event; and WHEREAS, The
Slooper Monument Project has involved bringing a Viking-like monument stone, or
bautastein, from the ancestral Norway farm to the gravesite as a tribute to
pioneer immigrants; and WHEREAS, The
tiny Norwegian sloop, Restauration, sailed to WHEREAS, Passengers
aboard the sloop, Restauration, were called “sloopers,”
and Jakob Anderson and his wife Serena, were aboard
the sloop and continued westward, eventually settling just south of Napa,
California; and WHEREAS, As
early settlers in the young State of California, Jakob
and Serena Anderson symbolize the contribution to California made by many
Norwegian-Americans through their strength, industry, and perseverance; and WHEREAS, In
2003, a large Viking-like monument stone was sent from the Slogvik farm (Jakob Anderson’s birth place) to California to act as an
historical marker at the graves of these Slooper pioneers; and WHEREAS,
The stone was sent by the local Tysvær government, Tysvær Historielag
(local historical society) and Einar and Rotraud Slogvik, a couple who donated
the stone and helped pay for its shipping; and WHEREAS,
The citizens of the State of RESOLVED BY SENATOR WESLEY CHESBRO, That he draws the attention of
the public to the dedication of the monument stone at the gravesite of Jakob and Serena Anderson at Member Resolution No. 1085 Dated this 5th day of May, 2004. Wesley Chesbro Honorable Wesley Chesbro 2nd Senatorial District |
