Einar's Slogvik Farm Photo Album

When Rotraud & Einar Slogvik of Norway came to visit the Wheelers in California, Einar brought with him a delightful little photo album of pictures of their farm & life in southwestern Norway. With this album he was able to show visually what his home area looked like.  As he & Rotraud left after their 3 week visit, he presented this album to Keith.  We have scanned these photos and have added 3 maps to help you locate the Slogvik Farm.  We hope you enjoy this presentation.  Tusen Takk (Thousand Thanks) Einar !

A view of the Slogvik farm from out in the fjord. Of the 4 white buildings seen here on the same level, the red roofed cow barn is on the left, then the older farm house, the shop building & then on the far right is the sheep barn.

Rotraud & Einar's new house is built on the very site where the old house once stood where Keith's great great grandfather, Jakob A. Slogvik was born & raised. It is located just above the shop building previously mentioned.

This shows the deck and yard at the Slogvik's new house. This area commands a magnificent view of the fjord that runs north-south just east of the Slogvik farm.

This is view of the cow barn & the lower, older house where Einar's parents lived.

On the left is the farm shop/equipment building; further down the drive is the older home, and beyond is the cow barn.

This shows the garden entry area to the older house. Einar's father, Edvard, died in 2000; Einar's mother Laura, had continued to live here until just this month (Aug. 2002)

This is a view to the south east from the Slogvik farm down the Hervik fjord. The island of Borgøy looms prominently in the middle of the fjord.

Einar's 80 year old mother, Laura, is in her Slogvik farm kitchen. Having medical problems, she has moved in to a facility in nearby Aksdal where life will be easier for her.

The real boss of the farm!! Here is "PC" on patrol. No, PC does not stand for Personal Computer - His proud & distinguished full name is "Pelle Cæsar."

Here are 10 of their current herd of 15 Aberdeen Angus cows & calves.

Between Rotraud & PC are just a few of their 40 "Norway White" sheep.

Here Rotraud brings some of their sheep into the sheep barn (complete with its own silo at far end).

Here "farmer Rotraud" pumps manure slurry from the pit under the barn where the cows are kept in winter. The tractor will then take this wheeled tank out to the hay fields where the slurry will be spread.

A real fruit lover, here Einar covers their cherry trees with netting to protect them from hungry birds.

Farmer Einar's "day job" relates to his owner/operator business with this dump truck and an excavator.

Here he is in the process of loading his "old" Kobelco excavator in the back of his truck.

Here he moves dirt with his new Kobelco, purchased just this spring.

He also spends much time moving Norwegian rock, often building new roads or building sites.

Here he gets a load of gravel in his dump truck.

NOW FOR A LITTLE LOCAL HISTORY ... >>>

The Tysvær area where the Slogvik farm is located played a prominent role in the history of Nowegian American immigration. Here local historian Sigmar Myre role plays the famous Cleng Peerson, Norway's "Father of Emigration." Cleng Peerson was an advance scout for the "Norwegian Pilgrims" that came to America on the Sloop Restoration in 1825.

Cleng was born & raised a short distance southwest of the Slogvik farm & was an older cousin of our Jakob A. Slogvik. While this ancient house might not have been the one Cleng actually lived in, it is from approximately the same era and at least  would be similar to the one he lived in, as well as similar to the one our Jakob was raised in here on the Slogvik farm.

A simple map showing the relative location of Norway & the Slogvik farm to the rest of Scandinavia.

A map of southern Norway highlighting the major cities of Bergen, Oslo, Stavanger & Haugesund in relation to the Slogvik farm.

Here is just a northern portion of Rogaland fylke showing the Slogvik farm in the center of the Tysvær kommune east of the coastal city of Haugesund.
