The Slogviks visit the Wheelers - Summer 2002

PHOTO ALBUM 9

July 30

After a short walk up a San Francisco hill, we catch the Powell & Hyde Cable Car to get us close to Chinatown.

This is the view down Washington Street from the cable car.

At the end of this pleasant and fun ride, we look back and get this photo of the car.

Another short walk and we rest at Portsmouth Square in the Chinatown area.

In this pleasant park, teachers Peg & Einar find the monument which marks where the first California public school was built in 1847.

Waiting for the Wok Wiz tour to begin, Peg finds this nearby public area that was ideal for us to enjoy our morning coffee.

Patrick comes in to the City to join us in the Wok Wiz Chinatown Walking Tour.

Our guide, pictured in the center here, pauses at this intersection where the cable cars pass Old St. Mary's Cathedral.

On this Sacramento St. corner we wonder about this Floating Sushi Boat Restaurant. At this time our guide was explaining the street naming practices.

The tour included many side streets and this back alley. This gave us an in depth view of life in this part of the City.

Hidden in one of these back alleys, we were taken to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company of San Francisco.

In this small crowded factory, we were shown how Chinese fortune cookies were produced.  Yes, we got samples!

As soon as we exited the cookie factory, this group of happy school children arrived for their turn to learn about this business.

This street scene is typical of the hustle & bustle of San Francisco Chinatown.

Because fish is a prominent feature in the Chinese diet there were several colorful fish markets in this part of town.

Our group pauses on the sidewalk after visiting the Buddhist Ma Tsu Temple and receiving little red good luck charms that were blessed inside.

After much walking around Chinatown our Norwegian traveler were ready now for a good Chinese meal.

This fine tour ended with an 8 course lunch featuring a nice variety of Chinese food. Each dish was explained as it was served. Chop stick lessons were included.

The tour now over, our concerns now turned to leaving Chinatown & getting the Slogviks to the San Francisco International Airport in time for their flight.

On the way to the airport, we pass by San Francisco's gilded City Hall.

Here Patrick, Peg & Rotraud hurry in the Airport only to stand in the inevitable long lines.  It was now time to bid farewell to our dear friends and wish them a good flight back to Norway.
