The Slogviks visit the Wheelers - Summer 2002

PHOTO ALBUM 7

July 29

Driving down from Nevada City in the morning, we arrive at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park in downtown Sacramento just before opening time.

This state historic site marks the location of the original settlement & fort founded by John Sutter around 1839. It was upriver from here that one of Sutter's men found gold in 1848, which lead to the California gold rush of 1849.

Inside this reconstructed fort are many displays, artifacts and period demonstrations.

In one of the corner gun towers Einar inspects a couple of the old canons.

Here a volunteer dressed in period costume discusses the everyday life and living conditions experienced by the early settlers.

Another volunteer portraying an early trapper relates his detailed knowledge of the harsh life and work of a western trapper,

Einar & Rotraud listen to how sailors from years past played a role in this early settlement.

This skilled blacksmith, using period tools, demonstrated nail making while we were in the fort.

After visiting son Patrick at his Richmond Marina home, Patrick takes the Slogviks & Keith on a whirlwind tour of San Francisco. The first stop after crossing the Bay Bridge (shown here) is the famous Red's Java House on the Embarcadero.

A quick drive up the Embarcadero/Herb Caen Way brings us to the famous Fisherman's Wharf. Here we had just walked through the fish market & restaurant area.

A little further out on the wharf Rotraud takes a picture of Patrick & Einar with Alcatraz in the background. We had planned a tour out to "The Rock" but we ran short of time. This is as close as we got.

On our way to Pier 39 Rotraud takes a break as crowds of tourists pass us by.

Rotraud, Einar & Patrick pause to listen to a street musician before entering the crowded Pier 39.

With the many exotic and interesting booths and stores on Pier 39, Einar is first attracted to the fresh cherries.

We all stop for a photo op where the harbor seals have notoriously taken over some of the finest boat slips. The boaters were not amused.

This shot from the walkway over the Embarcadero captures the tour boats on the left, Pier 39 on the right  and Alcatraz in the center distance.

Turning 180 degrees on the walkway, we now see the city skyline with Coit Tower & the pyramid shaped Transamerica Building (tallest commercial building in the city).

With the prominent Fisherman's Wharf sign and the old street cars in the background, we get back to the car after making the loop around this 'must see' area of the City.

Photos from the remaining part of this city day continue in Album #8.
