The Slogviks visit the Wheelers - Summer 2002

PHOTO ALBUM 5

July 24

Our first stop after leaving the Mill-Casino Hotel is the Cranberry Sweets Candy Factory/Store in Coos Bay. We will also later this day visit their Bandon store. Yumm, good! A longtime favorite of ours.

Driving west from downtown Coos Bay, we come again to the little community of Charleston. Here we check out the piles of oyster shells that will be reused in the local oyster farm.

A little further southwest we come to Sunset Bay State Park with its beautiful cove and interesting geology.

And a short distance further on we come to another one of our favorite places, Shore Acres State Park and Botanical Gardens.

Peg captures this serene photo of Einar & Keith and their reflection on the pond in the Japanese garden.

Also in the Japanese garden, Peg captures another outstanding photo. The bronze cranes add interest while Rotraud, Einar & Keith pose across the pond.

This photo of the herb garden at Shore Acres was taken especially for our mutual friends in Karmøy, Norway, the Ebnes.

A short distance from the gardens we view what had been making all of the barking sounds --- a large group of sea lions.

Driving the back roads south towards Bandon, we photograph the devastation caused by logging - not an uncommon site along this beautiful coastline. We now think of our "cowboy" president and his comments that foolishly suggest that logging would clean up forest "kindling" and thus prevent forest fires!

Now it is time for good strong coffee and pastries at one of our favorite Bandon coffee houses.

Tourists in the parking lot in one of our favorite Oregon towns, Bandon - Here are: Peg, Rotraud & Einar.

After picking a few salal berries, Einar shows off his new Oregon Coast tee-shirt.

Rotraud takes a stroll in the grassy field along this part of the southern Oregon coast.

Another striking view of the Oregon coast.

As the waves crash on this section of beach, Rotraud & Keith discuss philosophical topics.

Einar & Keith ponder whether or not this piece of drift wood would fit in their suitcase. No, we did not take this sample of American wood.

Back in California, we stop again at the Trees of Mystery where we enjoy the world class collection of Native American artifacts ... and it is free ... granted, one must go through the extensive (but fun) souvenir shop first.

This redwood rendition of the famed "End of the Trail" sculpture, along with Einar & his Trees of Mystery bumper sticker, is an appropriate last image for this long 8 day trip. Now, back home to Mad River & some rest.
