The Slogviks visit the Wheelers - Summer 2002

PHOTO ALBUM 3

July 19 through 22

Leaving Roseburg, we drive up the Willamette Valley & then turn east on the Columbia River. Later in the day we drive through these eastern Washington wheat fields on our way to Clarkston near the Idaho boarder.

In Clarkston we visit Helen & Jim Calvin, Rotraud & Einar's friends. Jim had lived in Norway several years ago and worked on the Kårstø gas plant in Tysvær, not far from the Slogvik farm.

With Helen & Jim shown on the left here, we enjoy a pleasant morning in their back yard. Einar, Peg & Rotraud are on the right. The weather will soon warm up and we will appreciate the car's air conditioner.

Here we find Helen with 2 of their llamas. We will soon be driving up on the bluffs showing here in the background.

High on the bluffs' view point Einar & Rotraud look down on Lewiston, Idaho, on the left and Clarkston, Washington, on the right.

Driving north up the western edge of Idaho, we get this view from the car of picturesque farm land.

Arriving at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, we meet Peg's folks for lunch at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Hotel on the Lake.

At the Sandpoint home of Dick & Arlene Giles, the Slogviks are treated to a favorite American dinner of shepherd's pie and "ugly chocolate cake" with raspberries & ice cream.

Sunday morning coffee on the Giles' deck before heading off for brunch. Ginger Giles can be seen here asking Einar for a treat; Jill, the black dog, is in the background.

Rotraud, Peg & Einar pose in the driveway to Dick & Arlene's north Sandpoint home.

With the gentle rocking of this floating restaurant in the town of Hope, we all enjoy a leisurely brunch.

With the help of a passing boater, we all get our picture taken at the Hope Marina on Pend Oreille Lake.

Arlene enjoys the brilliant flowers blooming on the Floating Restaurant.

Rotraud also enjoys this floating restaurant's flowers as she takes a break in the shade.

Next stop on our tour of the Sandpoint area is the world class ski resort on Schweitzer Mountain.

The group poses by this interesting statue in front of the lodge at Schweitzer. No snow here on this hot summer day.

Before leaving the Giles home in Sandpoint, dog lover Einar spends time with Ginger. Eat your heart out PC (who got left behind to tend the farm in Norway).

After a long morning drive across the plains & wheat fields of eastern Washington, we come again to the Columbia River, this time near the town of Vantage.

Near Vantage we enjoy the fascinating Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. (Here is another informative Ginkgo Petrified Forest web site.)

Here, below the Park interpretive building, Peg & Einar point out the ancient petroglyphs that were brought up from lower country before they were flooded by the building of the Wanapum Dam.

Einar inspects more of these large pieces of petrified trees.

Driving south to the Maryhill State Park near the Oregon boarder, we come to the full sized reproduction of Stonehenge.  Here Rotraud & Einar pose inside this replica. (See some other photos by another person.)

Below "Stonehenge" on the fertile plain near the Columbia River, Einar is impressed with this prolific peach orchard.

In the midst of the orchards we find a delightful fruit stand and load up on peaches. Most interesting here is our discovery of the very delicious "donut peach."  (More on donut peaches.)

Now it is time to drive through Portland and get closer to the coast to cool down. We will spend this night in Hillsboro west of Portland.
