1960 Holy Land Tour - Day 3 - Fri., Aug. 12

MOUNT OF OLIVES, OLD CITY: Stations of the Cross, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Garden Tomb, LEAVING. (Again, many photos taken this day did not turn out due to serious camera malfunction.) [See: Old City map from WikiTravel]

See [Commentary, Day 3]

This view of the Mount of Olives is from the southwest corner of the walled city of Jerusalem.

On our way from the hotel to the Mount we pass what is now a familiar site, Herod's Gate in the northeast portion of the Old City's wall

We drive along the east side of this ancient walled city.

Arriving at the summit of the Mount of Olives, we visit the Chapel of Ascension, believed to be the spot from where Jesus acsended into heaven.

Built originally in the late 300's it has been rebuilt many times & is both a chapel & a mosque.

Here the Church of Ascension is seen in the backgound.

The area near the Chapel, being the highest spot near Jerusalem gives a spectacular view of the old city with its prominent Dome of the Rock.

Another view of the Old City & the Dome (this photo taken later by a friend with the new camera).

A view toward the northwest with Israel in the backgound.

We return to the old walled city & enter through St Stephen's or Lion Gate.

We begin our walk along the infamous Via Dolorosa & approach what is portrayed as the Ecce Homo Arch.

We will trace the 14 Stations of the Cross, commemorating events of Christ's final days from condemnation to being laid in the tomb.

Our group leaving the Church of Flagellation.

Church of ...??

The cross rests while the tourists gather to the right.

A group of Lebanese Christians tracing the Stations of the Cross.

Through a narrow passageway on Via Dolorosa.

Not a formal Station but an interesting view of folks & movie ad.

Station IV where Jesus supposedly met his mother Mary.

The old camera acts up again at Station V where Simon helped Jesus carry the cross.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre with scaffolding holding up the walls in much need for repair.

Outside of the walled Old City, we come to the entrance of the Garden Tomb.

The old camera gives up & this is the best of many double/triple exposures taken here.

A purchased slide of the crypt inside the Garden Tomb.

Back to our hotel with the UN Jeep station wagon parked outside.

Then soon to the airport for departure. Here a Lebanese Middle East Airline plane is parked near where we will board our Air Force plane.

In the air looking down probably somewhere over Jordon.

The end of a short, but history packed, holiday!
