1960 Holy Land Tour - Day 1 - Wed., Aug. 10

ARRIVING NEW JERUSALEM, DRIVE EAST, BETHANY, JERICHO, JORDAN RIVER, DEAD SEA ---

See [Commentary, Day 1]

We disembark from our US Air Force C-54 at the Jerusalem Airport.

A view of the airport terminal building as we drive off.

Heading south from the airport towards the city of Jerusalem.

A street view as we near the city from the north.

The City Hotel where we will be staying north of the old walled city (notice skylights on roof)

My room was on the top floor with one of those skylights over the very low ceiling of the WC. This is the view a tall fellow gets at times of standing relief!

A more traditional balcony view from our hotel in "New Jerusalem."

Barbed wire & tank traps could be seen along many roads - left over from the last war (or ready for the next?).

We skirt around the old city on the new highway heading towards Jericho.

On the road leaving the Jerusalem area but before dropping down steeply towards Jericho.

A fast blurred shot of attractive ladies carrying heavy loads along the road.

The St. Lazarus Church in Bethany on the southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives (Bethany).

Mosaics on the face of this Franciscan church supposedly built over the site where Jesus resurrected Lazarus.

The altar of the Franciscan Church at Bethany.

The Lazarus tomb grotto area with church in background.

Entrance to Lazarus' tomb near the Church.

Heading down the mountain, we pass the traditional site of the Good Samaritan Inn.

A valley view towards the nearby mountains - maybe the Mount of Temptation..?

This probably taken near Elisha's Fountain near Jericho. Women are carrying water back to the Palestinian refugee camps.

Members of our group far down in the archeological excavations of the ancient city of Jericho.

Looking up from the excavations westward toward the Mount of Temptation.

The fertile agricultural valley of Jericho.

The Jordan River east of Jericho and north of the Dead Sea.

This is supposedly the area of the Jordan River where Christ was baptized.

Keith at an unidentified shrine near the Jordan River . . . ?

Keith poses next to an interesting elevation sign on the northern banks of the Dead Sea - elevation: 1300 feet below sea level.

Some bathers in what is said to be the saltiest & most mineral-laden body of water in the world.

A view across this famous sea toward the Jordanian mountains on its east bank

The Dead Sea Hotel & Casino - we had no time to spend here.

We were soon heading back up the steep grade toward Jerusalem - the Dead Sea fading behind us.
