TWELFTH GENERATION

3820. John RICHMOND (1097)(386) was born about 1594 in Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. He was baptised in 1597 in Ashton-Keynes, Wiltshire, England. He died on 20 Mar 1664 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. IMMIGRANT - "Tradition from many sources says that he came from Ashton-Keynes, Wiltshire, and there is a record of baptism there for John Richmond in 1597. He must have been married before he came to the new world, but nothing about his wife has been found. John Richmond was one of the 46 original purchasers or proprietors of Taunton in 1637, having six shares. ... Although John Richmond was away from this pleasant place for much of his life, he returned and died there, leaving his Taunton land to his eldest son John. There are references to John Richmond earlier than his 1637 purchase and his taking the oath of fidelity in Taunton before 1640 (Richmond, p. 2). These are found in the Court Records of the Province of Maine. ... 'It is the opinion of the writer that John Richmond came to America on one of these trading-vessels about 1635, and engaged in business in Saco. Records of Courts held at Saco in the Province of Maine, under Capt. William Gorges, mention sundry suits by and against John Richmond.' ...it is possible that he returned to England during the civil war which raged from 1642 to 1648, dividing families as did our own civil war. It is interesting that the accounts do not say which party he supported. The next time his name appears is in Newport, Rhode Island, where he was a juror in 1642 and a householder in 1643 (Austin, Additions and Corrections, p. 57). Then there is a gap until 1655. He was one of the Commissioners, for Newport, at the 1656 Court of Commissioners, held at Portsmouth. At some time he purchased lands at "Squamicott" (Misquamicut, now Westerly, RI), because he bequeathed them to his children. He mentions four children in his will but not his wife, so she must have died earlier. Richmond says the children were born from about 1627 to about 1639. The inventory of his will is given in NEHGR 7:180 as £10 11s 09d., which is not a great deal. Perhaps it does not include the land. Richmond quotes the will (p. 2), but not the evaluation, and earlier (p. xvi) states that he was 'a large landholder, and quite wealthy for that time.'" (Hubbard)
