4736. Olav Kold SKIFTUN
(1099)(1100). Mentioned 1550
& 1563. (Slooper book)
He was in Skiftun in 1563 when he paid 15 1/4 daler (dollar) in tax and was the
highest tax payer in Hjelmeland. This and other indications of a high tax on
the farm indicated that Skiftun was a prosperous farm. (Hjelmeland local history
book) He was married to Bergitte or Birgit Savatsdtr. (Sevatsdtr.) SKIFTUN in
(probably) Skiftun, Rogaland, Norway.
4737.
Bergitte or Birgit Savatsdtr. (Sevatsdtr.) SKIFTUN
(1101)(1102) was born about
1540 in Sandanger, Norway.(1103) She
died in 1626. Resident and then owner of the family farm of Skiftun (see Note
for her father Sjovat for more information on Skiftun). First marriage to Olav.
Administration & distribution of her estate ("skifte") recorded
in Skiftun, Norway. (Slooper book) After Olav's death she married to the next
farmer of the place. Prior to this the "farm had been used as one 'bruk'
(or farm)," but the widow Birgit, her granddaughter Ingeborg Ellingsdotter
and her husband Alv or Orm Olavson (b. abt 1540 in Nesheim in Sjernarøy?)
lived all on the farm in early 1600s. They probably used different parts of
the farm. Later on Sjovat Olavson, son of Olav and Birgit, moved from Sandanger
and took over the farm as an old man. He had the whole farm. His two sons got
a part each; Ola got Norda Skiftun, the part north of the Skiftun creek, Hans
got Søra (south) Skiftun." Ola's north part later became farms number
1 and 2; Hans southern section became farms number 3, 4 and 5. Orm and Birgit
had 2 children: Ola, who lived in Byrkjeland in Vikedal, and Ingrid, who married
the Finnøy-priest Elling Simonson. Brigit may have survived her second husband,
Orm, also. "She is listed as farmer (user of the farm) in the district
lists (lensrekneskapa) 1603-1625. Kruna(?) owned one half laup smør
(smør = butter) in Skiftun, and of that Birgit payed the tredjeårsbygsel
(third-year-usage) in 1603. She owned one laup in Skiftun in 1617. In 1624 she
owned 4 laupar and 1 pund in four other farms. Her inheritance was distributed
in 1625. The estate was well equiped, both in terms of land and in terms of
goods like silver, pewter, bedding, cabinets, and chests. Among others there
was «8 Malide Leritz thaffler» -- (no clue what that is). It was only
valued to 2 dlr., but it anyway indicates a standard of living well above average."
(Hjelmeland Bygdebok) Children were:
i.
Sjovat Olavson SKIFTUN(1104). "
Sjovat Olavson moved here (Skiftun) from Sandanger. He is listed as farmer here
from 1625 - 1637. His sons Ola and Hans took over one part each of Skiftun
after their father. Ola may have taken over the part of his brother-in-law Tore
when he moved to Sandanger. Hans is not listed as farmer here before after his
fathers time, when his brother-in-law moved to Sandanger." (Hjelmeland bygdebok)
