988. George WIGHTMAN
(761) was born in Jun 1632. He died in Jan 1722. "Tradition
makes him a descendant of Edward Wightman burned for heresy at Litchfield in
England, 1612, Apr. 11 (being the last to suffer death for religious liberty,
as is stated). He was a relative (perhaps brother) of Valentine Whitman, who
early settled in Providence. The descendants of George have more generally preserved
the spelling of the name as Wightman, though occasionally using the other form
- Whitman.
1669. He and others were arrested by Connecticut authorities and taken to Hartford,
because they owned allegiance to Rhode Island. They were kept in jail some time.
1671, May 20. He took oath of allegiance.
1673, May 6. Freeman.
1679, Jul. 29. He and forty-one others of Narragausett petitioned the King
praying that he 'would put an end to these differences about the government thereof,
which hath been so fatal to the prosperity of the place; animosities still arising
in people's minds as they stand affected to this or that government.'

He was for some years member of the Town Council.
1710, May 17. He and seventeen others bought 7,000 acres in Narragansett of
the vacant lands ordered sold by the Assembly.
1712, Feb. 19. He and wife Elizabeth sold William Gardiner 27 1/2 acres in
Boston Neck, for £103.
1722. Will - codicil - proved 1722, Feb. 12. Exs. sons Daniel and Valentine.

(762) was born in 1644. She died in 1722. Children were:

Elizabeth WIGHTMAN(763) was born
on 26 Jul 1664. She died in 1756. She married Alexander Huling (1665-1725)
son of James & Margaret Huling. Elizabeth and Alexander had 7 children.
ii.
Alice WIGHTMAN(764) was born on 29
Dec 1666. She died about 1747. She married Samuel Wait, son of Samuel and Hannah
Wait. Alice and Samuel had 6 children.
iii.
Daniel WIGHTMAN(765) was born on
2 Jan 1668 in Kings Town, RI. He died on 31 Aug 1750. He married first Catharine
Holmes (1671-1699) daughter of Jonathan Holmes and Sarah Borden. Daniel and
Catharine had 2 daughters. Daniel married second Mary (1669-1732) and they had
3 children. Daniel married third Catherine Gardiner (widow of Joseph) who was
the daughter of John Holmes and Frances Holden.
"He was a house carpenter. ...
1704. Newport. He was ordained as minister of Second Baptist Church, having
joint care with Rev. James Clarke. His pastorate extended over nearly fifty
years, his colleague dying 1736, Dec. 1, after which Nicholas Eayres was associated
with him, and the latter succeeded him in the pastorate.
... He was buried in the Newport Cemetery, as were his three wives."

Sarah WIGHTMAN(766) was born on 25
Feb 1671. She married first Apr 1697 William Collins (d. 1712) and they had
4 children. She married second a man by the name of Peterson.
v.
George WIGHTMAN(767) was born on
8 Jan 1673 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He died in 1761. He married first Elizabeth
and second on 13 Aug 1738 Sarah Ladd. George fathered 6 children, probably by
his first wife.
He was a Freeman in 1716; bought 150 acres in East Greenwich in Dec 1719;
was Deputy in 1724.

John WIGHTMAN(768) was born on 16
Apr 1674 in Kings Town, RI. He died in 1750. He married first 6 Jan 1700 Jane
Bentley, daughter of William and Sarah Bentley. They had 8 children. He married
second a lady by the first name of Virtue. His will was proved 8 May 1750 and
he was buried on his own farm.
