SIXTH GENERATION

50. Samuel DURNAL (280)(281) was born in 1762 or 1778. [Caldwell's death date of 1817 at "55 yrs of age" would indicate that he was born about 1762; another source has birth year as 1778; two other sources have birth on 26 Jul 1778 in Chester Co., PA; Terry Pfleghaar, in a response dated 3 Feb 2000 to my query on the FamilyHistory Durnal Surname Message Board, states that he was born 26 Jul 1778 in Morristown, VA, and added that this information came from the memoirs of Alfaratha Waltham. (I have not been able to find a town in VA by the name of Morristown..?)] He died in 1817 or 1819 in Luzerne Township, Fayette Co., PA. [Caldwell has death in 1817 at "55 yrs of age;" two other sources have birth in 1778 and death in 1819 which would indicate that he died about age 41; one source gives death specifically on 4 Dec 1819 at Luzerne Twp., Fayette Co., PA; Terry Pfleghaar, in a response dated 3 Feb 2000 to my query on the FamilyHistory Durnal Surname Message Board, states that he "died in 1819 in Morristown, OH(?)" and added that this information came from the memoirs of Alfaratha Waltham.] Family writing by Austin about Samuel's daughter Hannah states "Mr. Durnal, Hannah's father, served in the Revolutionary War under Washington, and was excommunicated* from the Quaker Church because of this service." (Gladys Austin's Birch Genealogy, 1973) If Samuel's birth date of about 1762 as indicated by Caldwell is correct, Samuel could have served in the Revolutionary War as a young man. If the birth date of 1778 is correct, he would have been way too young to be a soldier in Washington's army. If the 1762 birth date is correct, he would have been 21 years older than his wife, he would have been about 43 at the birth of his first child and about 56 at the birth of his last child. A Ruth Volk gives his birth date as 26 Jul 1778 in a RootsWeb Chester Co., PA, Internet query on 27 Sep 1996. Volk in the aforementioned query states that she found in the 1850 census of Fayette County, PA, the "following DURNALs all listing Chester County as their place of birth: Moses 79, Harriet 49, Clarrissa 40; Courtlan 48; Hiram 66" and speculates that Samuel "was a son of a Moses DURNAL and probably a brother or cousin to the Moses and Hiram above listed." Volk in another post indicates that the family moved to Belmont Co., OH, shortly after his death.
*(Thanks to Cheska Wheatley, a "Lookup" volunteer for Chester Co., PA, we now know that Samuel "would have been disowned, not excommunicated, by the Society of Friends... This would mean that he could attend meetings for worship if he so chose but could not participate in the business meetings of the Society.")
He was married to Rebecca HALL on 6 Dec 1804 in Philadelphia, PA. [Terry Pfleghaar, in a response dated 3 Feb 2000 to my query on the FamilyHistory Durnal Surname Message Board, gives this marriage information and added that this information came from the memoirs of Alfaratha Waltham.]

51. Rebecca HALL(282) was born in 1783. She died in 1856. Ruth Volk in a RootsWeb Muskingum Co., OH, query dated 1 Nov 1996 states "I just found my ancestor Rebecca (HALL) (DURNAL) TAYLOR in the 1850 census in Janesville (sic) TWP (Muskingum), OH, age 76. Her husband Noble TAYLOR apparently died shortly before 1850 and she died in 1856." This would indicate that Rebecca remarried after Samuel's death and that she most likely died in Muskingum Co., OH. In another RootsWeb query for Chester Co., PA, on 27 Sep 1996, Ruth indicates that Rebecca was born on 13 Jun 1783 and that she married Samuel in May 1805 "probably in Chester County."
NOTE: SOURCES HAVE BEEN FOUND THAT INDICATE MUCH MORE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE ANCESTRY OF REBECCA HALL AND SEVERAL ANCESTRAL LINES HAVE BEEN TRACED BACK MANY GENERATIONS. SADLY, HOWEVER, THERE SEEMS TO BE MUCH CONTROVERSY REGARDING THE "OWNERSHIP" OF THIS RESEARCH. THEREFORE NO FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE GIVEN HERE AT THIS TIME. Children were:

child i. Abner DURNAL(283) was born on 21 May 1805 in PA. He died on 13 Oct 1875 in Tuscarawas Co., OH. He married Delilah Triplett Roszel (or Rossal); they had 8 children.
child ii. Elizabeth DURNAL(284) was born on 4 Nov 1807 in PA. She died before 1888. [She and her husband are both listed as deceased in Caldwell's 1888 book.] Caldwell has her first name as Eliza. She married Samuel Beven (or Biven).
child25 iii. Hannah DURNAL.
child iv. Harriet DURNAL(285) was born on 12 Dec 1812 in Fayette Co., PA. She died on 8 Oct 1831 in OH. She married George Taylor.
child v. Moses DURNAL(286) was born on 28 Feb 1815 in Fayette Co., PA. He died on 25 Oct 1868 in Warren Co., IA. He married Susannah Wright or Right.
child vi. Phoebe DURNAL(287) was born on 26 Jul 1817 in Fayette Co., PA. She died on 27 Jan 1862 in Fayette Co., PA. She married Joshiah Wilson.
child vii. Samuel DURNAL(288) was born in 1818 in Fayette Co., PA. [Ellerman has birth year of 1820 which would be 3 years after his father's death according to Caldwell; McKeon has 23 Mar 1820 in PA; Caldwell gives the birth year as 1818 in Fayette Co., PA, and, as Caldwell's article was mainly about Samuel who was then living, it is assumed Caldwell's data is correct. Caldwell's dates would still indicate that Samuel Jr. was born after his father's death.] He died in 1906 in (prob. OH). [Volk gives his death date as 26 Mar 1896.] If dates are correct, he was born after his father's death. According to Caldwell, Samuel "... removed with his relatives to Flushing Township, Belmont Co., (OH) in 1826, to Union Township in 1827, and Warren township in 1838." He married Sarah Ann Woodland in 1842. Caldwell (in 1880) goes on to state that "The issue of this union is: Isaac H.; Colston D., deceased; Caroline, deceased; Emeline, deceased; Othy B., married to Elizabeth Kerr; O. C., a medical student of two years' duration with Drs. Williams and Judkins, of Barnesville/ Mary E. and Rosa Bell, deceased." Sarah Woodland was the daughter of John and Nancy Woodland, nee Rowans.
