Doris M. Birch/Wheeler/Carter - Her 2nd Marriage
On
30 November 1958, after many years of widowhood, Doris (age 57) married John W.
Carter (age 59) at the First Christian Church in Corning, California. John
had been a friend of Doris' first husband and was a widower. He was a long time olive grower in Corning and worked in the
Corning olive plants as a mechanic. His son, Emerson Carter, was the best
man in this wedding; Doris's son Keith "gave her away." Keith,
with help from other family members, took many 35 mm slide photos of the
wedding. Now, 44 years later, Keith finds these slides are not in the best
condition and do not scan well with his "low end" equipment.
Still, there are many memories here for some friends and family members.

The wedding ceremony
concludes at the church as Doris & John exit. Janice on left looks over
her shoulder; Keith & Emerson can be seen behind the newly weds; the
minister is behind them. |

the wedding picture that did not survive well over the years. |

The feeding of the groom
gets tense ... |

mission is accomplished. |

Many well wishers gather
around the bride at the reception. |

Son &
daughter-in-law, Emerson & Norma, on left, as well as new
daughter-in-law Goldie Wheeler, get the groom laughing. |

The young folks gather
outside the reception & get ready to throw rice (L-R:
David Craig, Larry & Michael Wheeler, Steve Craig, John Jolly, Susan
Craig, Janice Jolly & Alice Craig). |

As the newlyweds get
close to leaving the church, the kids are ready. |

The rice starts to fly as
the groom & bride emerge from the hall. |

It is now time to go back
to Doris' home to change into traveling clothes & get some more photos. |
|
|
|
It will now be a noisy
drive to the train station. (That is Janice Jolly to the left of the
newly weds.) |
